What is SPCA?

We're in summer currently and I'm not sure that I want to donate money because I can't be sure that it'll be used to buy supplies for the animals. So I would like to know what items (dog food, cat toys, blankets, etc.) that I can purchase and donate...

I have a job interview at a local SPCA down the road tomorrow, and I wanted to know more of what they do other than taking in stray animals, caring for them and trying to find them a home, neuter/spay, putting them down.. and whatnot. I've tried googling...
