What is SPCA?

What can I do for my local SPCA?

  • I wanna help my local SPCA because I know some of those people work their butts off. The animals is another reason why I wanna help. I love animals alot. Please give me ideas what I should do.

  • Answer:

You can volunteer, either in the office or kennel, or as a dog walker. You can organize a pet food drive (ask what kind they feed before doing this, and specifically request that kind). You can offer to sponsor an animal by donating a small amount of money each month. Spread the word about adoption vs. buying from breeders. Raffle off something pet-related and donate the proceeds to them. Ask everyone you know for "Christmas presents" for the shelter. Encourage people to donate, perhaps instead of buying you one present they intended to, they could donate the cost to the shelter. Visit the director and offer to help with paperwork, adoption screenings, addressing envelopes, or whatever else needs to be done. Report animal cruelty and neglect immediately instead of letting the problem worsen, and encourage others to do the same. Ask what supplies they need and then get together with your class or coworkers to send a box full of their preferred type of toys/food dishes/etc. Get together a group to bring the office workers hot chocolate and sing them carols during a lull between visitors. Hand out Christmas cards with animal pictures that say something like 'You're the real Santa Paws', etc. Adopt a pet if you can.

Bringing them supplies such as food, blankets, toys etc is always a great gesture. Some shelters can only afford enough food to give each animal one serving per day. For the bigger breeds such as shepherds, dobermans, rottweilers, etc that is not enough food. And if the shelters are anything like the ones in my town..most of the dogs are the larger breeds. Very rare to see small breeds in shelters. You can offer to help clean out kennels, take the dogs for walks, bathe the animals. Or simply go in and ask them..what is it that I can do to help around?

Do they have a volunteer program? I volunteer at my local one. By walking dogs, caring for cats and other small animals, or bathing them and cleaning extra dishes, brushes and cages, you can help support the shelter, lend a much-needed hand and allow them to save money to help save animal's lives rather than try and hire more staff. See if they have a website or call and ask them directly what you can do to help. Do they accept donations? Toys, kennels, food, grooming supplies and shavings for rodent cages are some of the things our local shelter accepts (things such as food must not have been preciously opened, for safety reasons). Towels for drying bathed dogs and for kennels when litters of puppies and kittens come in are ALWAYS needed; they get wrecked pretty fast. I say call. The shelter would probably very much appreciate it and I'm sure they will have something you can do for them. If you want to so something more on your own, do a "towel drive." In the summer, I sometimes just go door to door seeing if people have extra towels or rags for the shelter. Sometimes I look a little crazy, but once I explain what it's for everyone is very happy to oblige. The shelter is always very appreciative. You could also come up with ways to make money for donations. This isn't always easy, because people usually require legitimate proof that you're taking donations for the SPCA and not as a scam, but if you're dedicated I'm sure there's something you can do. Thank you on behalf of many animals and shelters who have benefitted from the generousity and time shared by people like yourself.

You can donate animal food, dog blankets or money. My local SPCA also allows some people to volunteer to play with the animals, take the dogs for walks etc. God Bless you for being such a great, giving person and for having a loving heart.

Horse crazy

Volunteer, give money, give pet food, etc.

Donate money, volunteer to help clean up cages, etc.... Best thing is to go in and talk to him. Or give them a call.

Nikki

You can either volunteer or donate money to help them out.

Cleaning the cages regularly is enough help to comfort the poor creatures.
