When are the Olympic Swimming Finals?

How do the swimmers qualify for the finals from the semis? Is it like the top three from each semi automatically qualify and then the last 2 are the best times? or is it like only the best times that count (so rank doesnt matter)? or maybe its the first...

i think that they will do ok. they are the strongest swimming country. but right now china is pulling through the strongest in the heats. so i dont know, it looks pretty shaky.
