Which is better petrol or diesel?

I'm 19 and planning on getting a mini cooper within a couple of months, it will be my second car, and i want some more power which is why i'm getting a 1.6, plus i love mini's they are beautiful and i've always wanted one :) i want to which is better...

im looking to buy a new car soon but im unsure weitheir to buy an diesel engine or petrol. I do prefer to drive diesel because i find it easier but im not sure is it really worth the money what are the advantages of diesel n stuff thanks
