Which is better petrol or diesel?

Petrol or Diesel...Which car is better mechanically?

  • I'm still pondering over which car to get next. so far ive narrowed it down to a Golf. so, which is better Mechanincally... a petrol or a diesel? ie. is one prone for things going wrong more than the other?

  • Answer:

    well its 50/50 to be honest, petrols have high tenstion electrical componants that cause problems especially in the wet, deisels have now become over engineered and complicated which is great for the power and economy but it means if something does go wrong it costs a fortune to put write. but these are just bolt on items. if you expect to have the odd garage bill as every car will have to have at some point as nothing lasts forever then it realy comes down to the engine internals as that is where the big bucks are with having to have the engine out strpped and rebuilt plus any machining and what not and in my opinion a deisel pistons and rings will last much longer than a petrol engines pistons and rings as deisel contains a much higher ammount of natural products that help lubricate the engine where as petrol contains lots of man made solvents that are not able to lubricate and considering it all goes into the bores it washes the oil away and lessons the life of the pistons and rings which is why for decades deisels go on for ever and ever where as petrol engines have worn out within a couple hundred thausand miles and need a rebuild. i think what you really need to ask youself is do you want the engine to react the second you touch the throttle {deisels dont}, do you want to be able to pull a decent ammount of revs so your not changing gear halfway round a corner when racing about {deisels dont} do you want it to be a nice refined and quite ride {deisels arent}

Petrols are more prone to electrical problems. Diesels are more robust and reliable, but when things like the diesel injection system go wrong, that can be expensive. The general rule with diesels, is as long as the oil and filter is changed regularly, they last forever. I think you need to look at how many miles you do to decide between petrol & diesel. Edit to Timmy: I think you need to look at the compression ratios of petrol and diesel before spouting nonsense and trying to look clever. The pressures on the moving parts of a diesel engine are much *much* higher than a petrol. And piston speed is irrelevant as it is dynamically balanced by counterweights and other pistons movements in both petrol and diesels.

the petrol one is prone to damage more! the petrol piston inside the car beats faster meaning that such things like the drive shaft with be put under more pressure meaning all those little things could go at any time. the diesel one beats slower meaning less pressure, simple!

I made the same choice recently and bought a VW Passat 1.9TDI. I must say that the diesel took some getting used to because it delivers the engine power differently. Now after having the diesel for some time I would say that it depends on the type of motoring you do. If you do high mileage and lots of motorway journeys then the diesel is great, wonderful for cruising in fact. However, if you do lots of short journeys and only the occasional long journey I would go for a petrol car. Diesels are slow off the mark acceleration wise and prone to stalling at low revs but once you get them going they are fine and are great for pulling loads. Petrol cars give power straight away and are good for single person motoring with light loads. As to which is best, that is down to what you want from your car and what the costs are. Petrol cars are nicer to drive but if you want longevity and do very high mileages go for a diesel.

desiel defently, its a lot cheaper to run

diesel

Cute genius boy

Diesel, they go for years and years and years!

Diesel in my opinion is a hell of alot more reliable

wildinstinct

Diesels probably more reliable and longer life, engine, more total miles, but petrol will have better performance. Speed, acceleration etc. Diesel , more MPG but at the moment is a lot dearer than unleaded. Up to you to weigh up the pros and cons .

petrol. easier to maintain, cheaper parts.
