What computer Monitor should I get?

I was just trying to clean my boyfriends computer because i kinda got a few fingerprints on the screen (he doesn't like me going near it usually so i dont want him to know) I just used a wet cloth and some mild soap which got the screen spotless, only...

My computer tower has a 9pin port for a monitor. 2 columns, one column with 4 pin another column with 5 pins. How do I knwow hat kind of Monitor i should get?

I upgraded to a flat panel monitor and now have to get rid of my still functioning Dell 17" CRT Color Monitor. What is the best way to get rid of this?

The image on the screen seems to drag on, as if it's still loading. The image also seems to "stick". If you get what I'm saying here, I could really use your help. It's very irritating to have a computer that does this.

My computer can handle a max resolution of 1280 x 1040. If I get a monitor with a higher resolution will I be wasting money or worse, ruining the picture?
