What are TFT monitors?

I have seen on many occassions the word TFT used when browsing around searching for a suitable monitor, but what is it?

I am buying a new monitor and a specification I keep seeing is plug and play and I dont know what this means

is electricity consumption of tft monitors less than that of crt if so by how much ? wht other merits or demerits does tft monitors offer compred to crt monitors

Had CRT monmitor with good quality screen at work, told the new flat screen monitors were better for you, but my eyes are sore every day now after stairing into these 'safe' monitors for hours, anyone else agree?
