Why did they rename Bombay into Mumbai?

Some background: the original name Bombay was hijacked by nationalist extremists linked to Al-Qaeda and the bombings 08 india bombings.

I always thought there was stilla Bombay and had no idea that Mumbai is Bombay until right now I heard it on the radio.

I didn't realize Mumbai was formerly Bombay until it was mentioned as "formerly Bombay" in a book I was reading. Why was the name changed. What's the reason / significance of the change? How long ago did this occur?

All of my life I have known Bombay and Calcutta, we use to have school quizzes about world cities and these two were always coming up, then one day its suddenly Mumbai and Kolkatta, why ? Bring back Bombay and Calcutta !

i am really confused. i was looking for mumbai in an atlas, but i couldnt find it. then, i looked it up, and found "mumbai (bombay)". did i miss something??
