    The name bombay was changed into mumbai by an act by our parliament in 1997. Actually, the city was called mumbai long before because of the local languages marathi, and gujarathi. It is believed that the name comes from the name of Goddess mumba devi, a temple at bhuleshwar. The people of marwaris and gujarathis are so attached with the Goddess and they worship with trust. so, it is the main reason for the change of name as per the people's demand.

Its because of Goddess mumba devi. Actuallu BJP (political party ) promised people that if they come into power in then elections, will change name of bombay as mumbai. so they did it

They gave it its original name back. The iata code still is BOM... Why they did it I don't know. Some sort of Indian pride, I suppose, but it is their right to do so, finally. In India, it is no problem to ask for a destination either in the local language or in English, and if you say "Thiruvananthapuram" or "Trivandrum" really doesn't matter. You're a foreigner anyway; you're not supposed to know the local names.

It was to Indianize the name. A Maharashtrian name. That is all. Rest, they had to find a similar sounding one. So Mumbai.
