Why did they rename Bombay into Mumbai?

Why and when was Bombay renamed Mumbai?

  • I always thought there was stilla Bombay and had no idea that Mumbai is Bombay until right now I heard it on the radio.

  • Answer:

The name "Mumbai" is derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba – the name of the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi – and Aai, "mother" in Marathi. The name Bombay had its origins in the 16th century when the Portuguese arrived in the area and called it by various names, which finally took the written form Bombaim. After the British gained possession in the 17th century, it was anglicised to Bombay, although it was known as Mumbai or Mambai to Marathi and Gujarati-speakers, and as Bambai in Hindi, Urdu. The name was officially changed to its Marathi pronunciation of Mumbai in 1996. Bombay was officially renamed as Mumbai in 1996

The city Mumbai was Mumbai until the British took over. Because many of the British had trouble pronouncing the name they had changed the name to Bombay. Although many Indians still referred to Bombay as Mumbai while the British were in charge. Once India was free they wanted to rid of the British influence therefore they changed their name back to Mumbai. Hope this helps
