What are the newest effects for digital photos?

I'm a gamer and I have several online profiles such as myspace, gorgeousgamers, etc. And I wanted to do something cool with my pics but I have no clue how to do it. Any ideas?

I have been trying to replicate this effect but fail at it many times. How does the person I have linked to get their photos to have that vintage effect. I have played around with the gradient map, levels, curves, contrast, and many other things on photoshop...
