How fast & reliable is wifi on an airplane?

I just booked a flight, and the internet says the plane has wifi. Do you have to pay for it? Or how does it work? Thanks.

i am connected to wifi while on airplane mode, but i dont want my bill to be like $600. so if i stay on airplane mode while on wifi, is this free ?
