How do you get stars?

Okay I bought MK7 like 4 days ago I started to play it instantly. I've played the Wii version a lot so I got first place my first try but I got 3 stars on all the cups on the 50cc except the flower and the leaf cup. So went back replayed all the cups...

I was looking and it says to get to level 2 i needed to get like 100 stars. How do I view how many stars I have and how do you get them. Is 100 stars to level two correct?
