Can a debt collector deny payment by money order?

On there site it says GRC offers a variety of payment options, all provided at no additional cost to borrowers. Personal Check Money Order Certified Check Cashier's Check Cash Credit Card Western Union Quick Collect™ bank draft MoneyGram® e-Money Transfer Electronic funds transfer (EFT) GRC also has the capability to accept both credit card and ACH payments online. When i called them they said they dont accept money orders and they said the site needs to be updated. I talked to them about this in april and its June. Can i force them to accept money order, I dont want to give them my credit card or bank account numbers the website has been the same for over a year i also asked when did this policy go into effect they said last year

Answer:
By law all they have to accept is cash (this is any us currency that is a dime or larger). You listed many other types of commercial paper they accept. A cashier's check or Western Union will not inlcude your credit card or bank information. You may ask them if they will accept a U.S. Postal service money order. Many places accept them that do not accept any other type of money order. Good luck!

There is a big forgery problem. Yes, they can refuse to accept them. Do the wire transfer, they won't have your cedit information then.

Regardless of what their site says they can basically change their policy and accept what they want. If they must have a checking account and you really don't want to give them your real one do something like this. Open up a free checking account, I know Washington Mutual is one that offers them. Put enough money in that account to cover the payment they want. As soon as they take the money out and you have paid them off close out the account. It will be a lot more work on your part but would really be the only way if they don't want other payment types. Just remember that before you send them any money you have any agrement in writting.

They must be lying to you about this. It looks like they only want payments that will allow them access to your bank account. If they don't take money orders, send a cashiers check. Once I had an issue with a creditor who threatened to send back my payment. I made copies of all the money orders and correspondence, kept the receipts, and sent them certified mail. That way if it came up, I could prove my attempt to pay the debt. They sent back the first 2 payments, but soon after began cashing them.

Send it to them anyway. They aren't going to refuse the payment.
