Does Diaphragm singing still create throat tension?
-
I realised when I'm singing with my diaphragm I still get tension in my throat. Whats the reason for this and how to correct it? Thanx

Answer:
You should be taking the tension away from your throat by supporting below. Try focusing the support below your diaphragm, like a fist is trying to punch itself out of your belly by going down at an angle. If that doesn't work, you should consult with a voice teacher that specializes in vocal pedagogy.

You often hear people say, "breathe from your diaphragm." The problem is diaphragmatic breathing actually creates more tension than it alleviates, especially in the throat area. To correct it, visualize how the air is being received into your body. What organs actually fill up with air -- the lungs, right? The diaphragm neither receives air nor expels air so to focus on pushing it out or in will only creat tension. Shift your breathing focus from your diaphragm to your intercostal muscles (rib cage) and think of expanding gently and deeply as you inhale. You will find you have less tension in your throat and shoulders and a more supported tone. Many singing teachers incorrectly teach diaphragmatic breathing, but after 30 years as a professional singer and actor using the intercostal method, I have more support, a tension-free tone, and have maintained the health of my voice. Hope this helps a bit.

Also, be mindful of your jaw. Often if you have tension in your jaw, even if your breathing correctly, it will call tension in your throat. Keep it relaxed, move it around with your hands, and don't use it as tool for vibrato (some singers like to do this). It should just hang pretty look. Next. Don't try to sing so loud. Volume comes from better placement. Aim your voice to come from between your eyes, in the mask, and let it be natural. It will become louder naturally without the tension. You can help this by doing a warm up where you sing with your jaw droped and relaxed, and your mouth closed, on a mmmm. But keep as much space in your mouth as you can, don't let your tongue touch the roof of your mouth.. this will help your placement.
