How can I gain experience to be a paralegal?

How to gain experience in law?

  • Im graduating with my bachelors in paralegal studies spring 2012. I want experience before I graduate, and I know thats what an internship is for. I just feel it isnt enough? Im also studying abroad this summer in the major to london, amsterdam, and paris with the legal students, as well as my professor who is a lawyer of 30 years. She strongly urged me to go on this trip, as she told me I had the best presentation when she gave us cases and made us pretend we were prosecuting attorneys. There are plenty of legal jobs open here in my city, but they all want well experienced people, which is understandable! I just am not sure how to gain experience when everyone wants experience..you know? Suggestions? :)

  • Answer:

More experience that being an intern or different experience than interning? Do you mean you want a real job...like a paralegal? You can consider interning not only at law practices, but in your local/State/ or if you are at a top university, Federal gov't too. I would definitely leverage help from the professor. Tell her your plans and concerns, listen to her advice, then ask for her help. Let her know what you are looking for and ask if she can help, or knows anyone that can. People want to help, professors expecially want to help their students - it's a nice part of their job. Best of luck
