How long after your menstrual cycle are you fertile?

How long after having a baby should your menstrual cycle be out of whack (TMI)?

  • (For me, it doesn't matter if I breastfeed a baby or not, I still have my first period at around 8 weeks after giving birth.) I'm 33. My youngest (3rd child) is 9 months/ 1 week old. I've had a 28 day cycle my entire life until after giving birth to her, it's now 35-36 days. Also, my period has always lasted 4 days, 5 at most. Now, it lasts 7-8 days. There's more... I also now have to use a pad AND tampon at the same time and have clots. I absolutely dread it. How much longer should this go on? Normal???

  • Answer:

My periods sound much like yours. Though before I had children I was never one of those people who cramped alot, got bloated or got a pissy attitude at all.My periods came and went without much notice...I guess just lucky. Well now that I have had children...they suck! I get the whole 9 yards of it! Same like you. They are more painful and I do clot as well. That is just the shedding of the old gunk up in there..so don't worry. However,I do suggest that if your mother had problems with endometrial cancer,I would bring it up with your OB.There may be some tests they can do just to reassure you that you have nothing to worry about.Since it is in the family you want to be safe and get those things checked, that is understood.Hope all is well. But I think you are perfectly normal.

It was probably a good year before it was "normal" again... It took a year to come back in the first place and then a year of crazy erratic weeks of heavy bleeding with gut wrenching cramps when previously it was 28 day clock work with no symptoms aside from sore breasts and it would last three or four days. I wouldn't be getting nervous just yet....but it doesn't hurt to go get checked out...just for shits&giggles if it would ease your mind. It may even have been longer than a year for me...because when I got pregnant with Jake...I remember thinking "yay I'm pregnant" promptly followed by "crap and I was just getting back to normal" and I got pregnant with Jake just barely before Luke turned 3

Sounds pretty normal to me and the change could be due to your age as well. I didn't get mine back till 15 months PP, but it was instantly regular but way different. It was heavier, more painful, and 28 days - I was always on a long cycle previously. I'm 32. Childbirth and age can certainly change your cycles permanently.
