Why does my cursor jump around?

My cursor keeps returning to the middle of previous sentences and sometimes even highlights text. I am using a MacBook with v10.5.8 software. I am 100% sure i did not touch the touchpad while typing. I typed letter by letter while staring at the keyboard and it still happened. I have dropped my Macbook before. Could that be the problem?
