How can i remove a tax lien from my credit report?

Will property tax lien show up on my credit report at all?

  • Before my husband and I got married he filed a single tax return. Recently we got something in the mail stating that he owed taxes to the state. He set his taxes owed on installment payments, but until the back taxes are paid in full the state is going to be placing a lien on his property. Were guessing that one of these liens is going to be on our house. The house is owned by both of us. THe taxes that he owes are only in his name, and the lien will only be placed in his name because the taxes he owes are from before we were married when he filed a single tax return. I was wondering if the tax lien would show up on my credit report, or under the 'public records' section of my credit report because we both own the house. Since the house is owned by both of us there will be a lien against our jointly owned house (property). I just want to make sure that this will not effect me at all, so that when I go to purchase a car, etc It wont show up on my credit report.

  • Answer:

It would show up, but you can contact the Credit Bureaus and request that it gets removed if you have a legitimate reason, such as not being aware of the situation - This is actually very easy! But remember that you don't just have one, you have at least three credit scores with each of the major bureaus. Experian is one of them, I can't remember the other two but Experian is a start. There's loads of great info on sorting out your credit rating and getting rid of little blemishes in the book I used to do this, it's got who to contact and what to say etc. It's only published in paperback in the UK but you can get the ebook internationally. It's well worth a look, I've sourced it below.
