What happens with Delinquent Accounts on my credit report?

Removing paid/closed default accounts from credit report?

  • I have recently paid off a few accounts that went into default on my credit report one was a credit card debt the other a medical bill, however i disputed them as paid and now their status has changed to that but I was needing to find a way to remove it from my credit report. I had tried googles search engine not much luck , was it a mistake to even pay these off as they will remain on my credit report for 7 years? The bad thing is I really am good with my money , however when I was under the care of my guardian they weren't and now its reflected on my credit report. One final question will this increase my credit score at all ? or decrease it because they where so old?

  • Answer:

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act (Federal law) derogatory accounts show for 7-years from the date of first delinquency which works out to 7-years and 180-days. Nothing resets this time line and it makes no difference if the accounts are paid or not they will still show until this time line expires. Paying old accounts that have been sent to collections does nothing what so ever for your score. The only thing that changes is they show as paid with a $0 balance. This is why it's called credit history.
