    I have pet rats and they are all girls and apparently they are easier to train then males because they like to mark their territory. I have a triangle litter box in one if the Corners of my cage. They do about 70% of there poos and wees in it but I still have to clean up around the cage. The best way to train them is get a litter tray that they can fit into comfortable and every time you see a poo around the cage place it in the middle of the tray. You can also put some dirty bedding(bedding that has pee on it) and that will encourage your ratty friends to do both if their businesses in the tray. Make sure if you see your rat go in the tray and do either a wee or a poo give them a treat and get them really excited. Good luck. Sound like a great idea that you want to let your rats interact with the family outside if their cage. Have fun. P.s don't give up it can take a couple of months.

There are a bunch of great videos on youtube I suggest you watch that show different techniques for litter-training pet rats. Different methods work for different rats sometimes. I have never seen people using actual litter boxes though, I imagine it would probably be possible though. However you should not let them free roam without a cage as they could be seriously injured by eating something or getting trapped somewhere.
