Why do skiers never wear helmets?

Really? The freeride kids around here all wear them cus when we go for somethin, we go for it and for some, there's a high chance they could crash. I actually rarely see people around here without helmets. The race kids all wear them, the kids teams wear them, the freeride team wears them, the big mountain team wears them, the kids who are on their own (no team) wear them, I've even seen more tourists wearing helmets. It's actually kinda rare now for me to see people without helmets... If people are telling their kids not to wear helmets, they're actin like jackasses cus that's a really bad example and hurts the kids. If they don't crash, that's good but if they're goin all out like I know us local kids did, then they're gonna need those helmets... I smacked my head on a rail once, it sucked with a helmet on so I don't even wanna imagine the damage I would've had without one. I think that was also the crash that popped a couple ribs out of their cartilage (yes you can do that).

Because years ago no one wore helmets. Helmets add to the expense of an already expensive sport; some people perceive them to be uncomfortable, they know how to ski and feel they don't need a helmet because they've been skiing for years without one. Wearing a helmet is not mandatory in most ski areas however some places now are starting to require them for children and beginners. I ski several different areas and I see a lot of people wearing helmets. Brain injuries are a lot more expensive and debilitating than the cost of a helmet. Ski racers always wear helmets.
