Psychology and Nursing?

  • Okay first of all I apologize if I sound ignorant, I don't know too much. If I were to get a degree in psychology first (18-21) would I then be able to go on and become a registered nurse (21-24)? Would they fit well together? I am interested in becoming a nurse, but would love to study psychology....do these two fit well together.........or is it completely pointless and a waste of time? Basically would the psych degree help the nursing?

    Can't speak to the UK, but you could in the US. Although I think most people would just go for the nursing degree and take as many psych classes as they can. Psych is very useful in nursing because understanding the psychology of your patients can help a lot in getting cooperation and in understanding how their psyche affects their physical illness. You call also become a psychiatric nurse.

Have you ever considered mental health nursing? You can find many degrees which combine the two...however with the tuition fee rise..suggestible changes to NHS in UK...i would suggest going straight into nursing...because dnt forget you still need to do training....which may be another two years till you've got a stable job

Well there is aspects of psychology in nursing degrees (esp mental health nursing) but yes you could get a psychology degree first and then do your nurse training. Many universities also offer a shorter two year nursing degree for post graduates. Alternatively you could do a nursing degree first (3 years) and then study a 1 year psychology msc course which is the equivelant of a psychology degree.. this would work out cheaper in terms of fees for the first 3 years and would also mean that you could work as a qualified nurse part time while studying for the psych degree.
