What is a car overheating temperature?

My temperature gauge says my car is overheating?

  • Two weeks ago I had my oil changed at Jiffy Lube (which I never go there) and since that day I have had nothing but issues. The following day I drove about 1 1/2 away and by the time I got there - the gauge was almost into the red, so I pulled over and popped the hood. Nothing seemed to be hot so I got back in and started the car and the gauge went back down to normal. Before I left my destination I had a couple guys look at the vehicle. (Bare with me - I'm not familiar with cars) The fluid was fine and there were no bubbles. The exhaust was exhausting - not sucking air in. My fans are working. I can't think of what else they said. They couldn't see anything and thought maybe sensor? I'm not sure how I could figure that out? I returned to Jiffy Lube rather upset. I have never had issues with overheating until after this visit. JL could not figure it out either and gave me a card to a mechanic they work with. They told me if I visited this guy and he found they did something to cause it - they would pay for it. However, if I'm wrong and they didn't cause this - I have to pay for this random mechanic who I don't know and might also charge a lot. Can anyone help me with any of these issues?

If everything happened just like you said then go to the mechanic they told you to go to for 2 reasons number 1 they are admitting that they might have messed something up, number 2 if they did then you have documented proof of it and if something happens down the road then you already have the proof you need to win the case. Just be very clear with the guy you take it too and tell him exactly what happened and you want it fixed and thats it, and you want to know what he is doing and make sure he knows it is on JL not on you..even him looking at the car is on JL because they are the reason you are there not you..and he will check the sensor for the gauge that reads inside the car and basically probably fix the wire they hit or something stupid like that and youll be on your way like nothing ever happed...On the other side of the coin if you take it to your mechanic and he looks at it then you have to fight with them to get your money back...good luck and i hope this helps

Take it to JL's mechanic for a diagnosis and estimate initially, then you know what you are/or maybe letting yourself in for, then you can make an informed decision.

If the gauge is doing that when the heat or a/c is running it might be...forgot the name of it. Little thing on the side, has a few tubes running into it. Sorry,.

change the temperature sending unit, it sounds like it,s going bad ! don,t get it mixed up with the coolant sensor !

Most likely JL did not cause your problem. If that is the case, you will have to pay to fix it because it would have broken any way. It sounds like your car may not be overheating but rather the sensor is giving a false reading. In that case it shouldn't be too expensive to fix. I would suggest you take the car to JL's recommended mechanic. He is probably honest. However, if you don't trust him, see if you can get JL to let you to take it to a mechanic you both can agree on.
