Car stereo was making a crackling noise, then all the speakers completely quit working.?

I have a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo SS. A while ago, the speakers started making a crackling noise, and occasionally they would quit working all together. Now none of the speakers are working. The radio appears to be working. It has to be something with the speakers because even the dinging noise the car should make when the door is open has stopped. I bought a new amplifier and installed it, but the radio still didn't work. I'm not sure what could be wrong with it, and there aren't any stereo repair places around here. Anyone have any ideas?

that sounds like speaker leads grounding out somewhere. Pull out the speakers and make sure theyre not touching metal anywhere or that the speaker leads or terminals arent anywhere near metal and re-check the speaker wires. sometimes even you tape the wire on the speakers they still get lose. good luck..
