What is blood plasma?

I had a terrible experience donating plasma today, and I have some concerns. They stuck my left arm first and it wasn't a good stick, had flow issues after a few minutes, by the time they removed the needle the blood had fully coagulated in the line...

Blood plasma has a density of 1026 kg/m^3. What is the minimum height above a vein -- in which the blood pressure is 16 torr -- that a container of blood plasma should be placed in order for the plasma to enter the vein? The answer given is h=21 cm.

I've donated blood before... but never plasma. I'm thinking about doing it. Are the iron requirement the same for donating plasma? Is the needle any bigger? Basically, what are the differences in the requirements / methods between the two?
