What is blood plasma?

What differences are there between donating blood and donating plasma?

  • I've donated blood before... but never plasma. I'm thinking about doing it. Are the iron requirement the same for donating plasma? Is the needle any bigger? Basically, what are the differences in the requirements / methods between the two?

  • Answer:

Main differences are time (plasma donation takes longer because you donate a greater volume, done in batches) and the needle is wider so that blood cells can get through it without damage. Plasma is the protein and water portion of the plasma, Testing is the same as for blood donation but there are a few other physical restrictions because the donation approaches a liter of fluid. They will look at your arms to see if your veins and large and strong enough. You get reimbursed for your time, not directly for your donation. Plasma is used unfractionated as volume replacement for people with blood loss or severe burns, for clotting factors in people with hemophilia and similar conditions, for infection prevention especially in people who are unimmunized or immune-deficient, and to make tissue glue for surgery.

One donates whole blood and the blood is divided into it's various components such as plasma, red cells and platelets. These are volunteer donations that can be infused into patients. There are mandatory testing and questions that are asked before hand in determining eligibility. The collections at plasma centers are for profit paid extractions and not "donations". One receives money in exchange for the plasma. This plasma is not allowed to by transfused. What they do is fractionate the plasma into discrete components such as albumin and coagulation factors which can be sold after they have been sterilized and can be used medically.
