Stannous fluoride vs Sodium fluoride?

I did some research and apparently calcium fluoride is non toxic, but sodium fluoride is. How come Sodium fluoride is dumped into drinking waters and added to toothpaste? Why can't they just go with Calcium fluoride? I don't want to hear people say that...
