Is Croydon south-east or south-west London? As you know, their post-code begins with CR, not SE or SW. But what would they class it as?

I have booked a hotel near east croydon railway station. Oyster card is accepted there for travel to london? Plus this oyster card covers all the zones or do i have to select the zone? if i wish to travel in zones where there are most london attractions...
