Did I twist my ankle?

Can a dog twist its ankle? I think mine has but people laugh when I say that. He just was walking then started crying a lot but there's no sign of an injury - so I think he's pulled amsucle or twisted his ankle.

Last week I was walking around on rocks, not really paying attention to where I was walking, and I stepped in a whole and my ankle went all funny and I couldnt walk. I think I twisted it but I'm not really sure. Right now it still looks a little swollen...
