Contacts on line ---how do you do it?

My ym is up and running but all my contacts show like they are invisible. When my contacts IM me it tells me in the box that so and so appears to be off line so may not get message. How can we converse if they are off-line?

when I get on yahoo messenger some of my contacts show they are not on line but when I get on the computer they are on line so i have to rename my contact then they appear on line on my phone

well my light don't come on when i am available and it doesn't show when my contacts are on line my contacts light don't come on

I just up graded my messenger -- before my contacts who were on line appeared in bold print - now with the updated verison I can't tell who is on line.
