Driving in Leyton East London from Newcastle?
-
Hi Everyone. We are going to stay with friends in East London Leyton in April. The Rail fares are going to be about £250 which I think is steep. My Mam is Disabled so once we arrived in London our friends house is about a 15 min walk from the Bus Stop. This would be difficult each day however I though about driving from our home in Durham near Newcastle to London Leyton. Once in London we would not be using the car to drive around only to drive to and from the Bus stop or tube station in Leyton. We would not be driving in the City. I was wondering how easy it is to drive to London. I drove to Sheffield the other week and that was fine on the M1 which if we carried on would go to London. I know that the M12 is near where they live so I am hoping to just pull off there and then I know my way around leyton as I have been before. Really I want to know how easy it is to get to London and then do I have to drive through any difficult places to get to Leyton. Can I avoid the ring road or North Circular what ever its called. I am only 18 but quite a confident driver, I have driven to Edinburgh and Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool etc but never tried London. Any Help appreciated. Thanks

Answer:
There are lots of single tickets from Newcastle to London Kings Cross in early April for £37.50 or less. With a disabled rail card your mum travels for half price. If you get a Family Railcard the adults get a 34% discount on tickets and accompanied children 66% discount www.railcard.co.uk www.eastcoast.co.uk Is your mum in a wheelchair? If so you should Know that while all buses in London are equipped with wheelchair ramps, most of the Underground bar a few stations, is not accessible. However the Jubilee Line section from Stratford to Westminster is fully accessible, so when travelling into central London avoid the Central Line from Leyton and take a bus the short distance to Stratford for the Jubilee Line Driving into central London would be a nightmare because of congestion, lack of parking, and what there is, is expensive, and the daily congestion charges 90% of London black cabs have ramps but they too are expensive. Getting one just from Leyton to Strtatford Station wouldn't cost so much www.tfl.gov.uk Telephone 0843 222 1234

Go down the A1,turn East bound on the A14,take the M11 south bound, than A405 west bound too Woodford turn off and down to Layton, this route is most direct, check it out on Google map, also not so many road works, take your time and have print offs for the London end,if you don't have a satnav, hope this helps.

You can use Google Maps to get your driving route. Enter the Start address and the Finish address and you'll get a route with details and instructions. This link shows you a sample of a drive from London to Newcastle using Google Maps http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=il

I can't belive that the cheapest tickets are £250! Have you checked coaches also? Flights may be cheaper. You can always get a cab =the first day you arrive, then sort it from there.
goonerpro.... answer gives good directions to the Leyton area. You say you know your way around Leyton - did you go on foot or drive ? there are one-way systems !! You mention driving to the tube station. You will not be able to park easily there - maybe take the car back to the house. Two stops further out on the Loughton/Epping branch there is a car park at Snaresbrook, but that may fill up early in the morning. How will your mum cope with all the stairs in the underground stations ? Have a look at the www.tfl.gov.uk web site for transport in London. The tube map shows which stations are wheelchair friendly, but not really which have more or fewer stairs. Also, read about the Oyster card - a good way to travel in London (you get one at the station, load money on to it, then "touch in " when boarding a bus or entering AND leaving the tube system. Does your friend also have a computer (or will you be taking a laptop) ? If so, I suggest you ask the tfl site to give you directions to where you want to go each day. The options details show how many minutes walk is involved between, say, bus & tube or between tube lines. This is tedious, but at least you may be able to avoid difficulties. A hint: from Leyton into town, the Central Line track at Mile End is just across the platform form the District Line going into town. Changing there is certainly easier than changing at, say, Liverpool Street.

From Durham follow the A1 southbound to Junction 43 and then join the Southbound M1 towards London. Exit the M1 an junction 6A and take the M25 clockwise heading towards Stansted Airport and the Dartford Crossing. Once on the M25 exit junction 27 and take the Southbound M11 towards London NE and continue to the end of the M11 at junction 4 where it merges with the A406 North Circular Road. Keep in the left hand lane to take the slip road to the southbound A406 heading toward the Blackwall tunnel and the A13. Keep in the left hand lane to take the slip road from the North Circular Road heading towards the A12 Blackwall Tunnel down towards the Redbridge Roundabout. At the Redbridge Roundabout take the 4th exit onto the A12 heading toward the Blackwall tunnel. After going through 2 tunnels move over to the left hand lane to take the slip road towards Leyton and then at the end of the slip road turn right at the traffic lights, right again at the next set of lights before going straight ahead through the next 2 sents of lights to join the A106 Ruckholt Road which will take you to Leyton. Once in London I'm sure your disable mum would be able to use the Dial - a ride bus service which would be able to pick you mum up at where you are staying instead of driving her to the bus stop/station
