How long to get a roundoff back handspring?

Back handspring help? Urgent!?

  • Okay so I'm a level four gymnast, and I'm on the team at my gym. I have been on the team for a couple months. And for a couple months before I made it to team, I started to work back handsprings. First, at a special back handspring clinic that they had, and then in the pre-team class. So I've been working on these for such a long time, but I still cant seem to get it. I think it could be that my legs are weak but honestly, Ive been working for so long, so how can they still be so weak? I'm so upset that I dont have my roundoff back handspring and i compete in just one week... I have only three more practices and I need to get this by myself on the floor. We've done them on floor with my coach spotting but I'm just having so much trouble. All of the other girls used to say I'd be the second to have it(one of the girls had it by herself within the first few days) and yet, they almost all have it now, and I still don't. I am honestly, freaking out. My coach tells me that my roundoff lands straight up instead of leaning backwards with my feet under me and because of that my backhandspring will go straight up and straight down instead of back like it needs to... I dont understand how to get my shoulders to pop me off the ground enough to give me a good round off. Can anyone give me any advice? Is there anyway I can build strength fast so that I'll be able to get my roundoff back handsprings?

okay, so i don't really know whats happening to your back handspring cause i haven't seen it but my coach made me do a bunch of jump backs and now my back handspring is really easy. you probably don't have gym equipment at your house so when not at the gym you can practice jumping onto a bed. you start by standing really close to the bed and sort of start to squat, then pull your hand up and jump back. the goal is to land as far back on the bed as possible because to do that you need just the right amount of height and length to get far back. once you get used to it you should try to stand about 3 to 4 feet away from the bed and try to get you whole body to land on it if you have a good round off, you should practice doing round off jump backs. and should also do lots of back bends if you have them (bridges if you don't) to work on your arch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdSZo5lkAug this video is good but you should try to get your feet all the way on the block

I have the same problem, and i'm fixing it by these; 1. lay on the ground, and slam your hands back and fourth really fast to get the feel of opening your shoulders into the backhandspring. 2. Handstand snap downs 3. PRIVATE LESSONS with your coach 4. practicing on a cheese -it's much easier- 5. I had gotten the confidence one day, to do it by myself on the trampoline without my coach there. it built my confidence up and i tried until i have it perfectly. 6. watch videos, and get inspired. 7. CONDITION!!!

Your coach is telling you that you don't have the correct body position at the end of your roundoff. That means that your issue isn't with strength, it's just with finding the right body position so you can do your back handsping out of your roundoff. You need to get your feet in front of you when you land your round off. Think about staying hollow when you block in the round off so that you can snap your feet in front of you so you are ready for the handspring Some drills: Work on handstand hops. As you kick up into a handstand pop both of your hands off the ground at the same time. To do this, you need to push through your shoulders. Work on handstand snap downs. The ideal way to do this is to kick up into a handstand on a raised surface (panel mats) with a soft surface (resi mat) on the side you kick up on. Once you are in the handstand work on blocking and snapping your feet down hard enough that you have to fall onto your back. *you can do this drill just on the floor but instead of falling onto your back you are trying to make it feel like you have to sit down.
