Is a provisional worker a contract or permanent worker?

1099 contract worker making $10/hr...?

  • I'm applying for a job that says it is a 1099 contract worker job. the compensation is $10/hr, with the possibility of no longer being a 1099 contract worker after a trial period, and compensation becoming $12.50/hr. I did a little bit of research to try and understand what a 1099 contract worker is, but I'm still a bit confused. I understand that I'd have more taxes taken out of my paycheck i think, so I was wondering if anyone knew what $10/hr really would come out to? Is it worth it?

  • Answer:

In your case, a contract worker is really an employee who is being deliberately misclassified by a dishonest employer so they can cheat you out of the employer's half of social security and not pay for workers compensation insurance if you get hurt. If there is some kind of fl brochure, send a copy to your state unemployment tax office. They would like to audit the employer and get back unemployment tax from them. A real contract worker is only responsible for getting the job done, not showing up at a particular time or place and following orders.

This is a common scam to cheat you and the government. During the "1099 period" you are not covered for workers compensation insurance, unemployment and you pay all of the employee tax. Great deal for the employer but it is illegal. Report them to the state labor authority and go get another job.
