What items are VAT exempt in the UK?

VAT on import items outside the UK?

  • Hi, I'm from the UK and I'm interested on buying a limited edition psp that's never been released here. I'm buying it on ebay and it's shipping from the US. Do I need to pay any VAT for the item when it arrives?

  • Answer:

Yes, you will have to pay: VAT @ 20% of the declared value Carriers admin fee (they don't collect tax for free!) Games consoles seem to have 0% customs duty. For other products, customs duty becomes payable if the goods are over £135 in value but is waived if the amount calculated is less than £9.

i know this seems strange but its a bit hit and miss. yes of course you are liable to pay 20% vat and a collection charge by the post office, but the way they do it is, so many bags of parcels come off the plane. they take so many of the bags and if they find items over i think its £15 cost they charge them vat. the thing is they don't open all the bags so only a certain percentage pay it. if i was you i would resign yourself to paying it, and IF it doesn't happen at least you had the money to cover it.

There is no VAT in the U.S. What you will probably be charged are UK customs fees.
