I want to check if a company is vat registered?

Being VAT registered doesn’t really prove anything. The company doesn’t have to be VAT registered unless it makes over £64,000 a year and unless you are a VAT registered company, it doesn’t technically have to provide you with any details that it is VAT registered and customs will not be allowed to disclose any info. There are plenty of dodgy VAT registered business about.

If you have any legit paperwork from the company, they should have a VAT number printed on it. Usually at the bottom. I think you can 'phone HM Inspector of Taxes or Customs and Excise. They're in the 'phone book.
