How to do 1099's?

How to file a 1099?

  • I have five W-2 forms and one 1099 form. I was going to do my taxes free online, until I found out that this can only be done with a W-2 form. Then I've tried the 1040EZ, and again, can't be done when I have a 1099 form. How do I file my taxes when I have a 1099 form? Am I supposed to do my W-2s and 1099 together or separately? This is my first time doing taxes (I'm 18 and no one claims me as a dependent), and it's really confusing for me. Guide me like I'm an idiot.

since it is your first time to file a tax return, you might consider going to an AARP tax site if you have one in your area. They would help you and answer any questions, explain everything in a manner you can understand, and most sites will file your return free. Here's a link to their site, just enter your zip code to see if there is a site near you. By the way, the answer above is very good, except not all 1099Misc income is reported as a business on Schedule C. If the income is in box #7, then it goes on C or CEZ. Also, you can go to IRS web site at irs.gov, look on home page for "free file", there are several companies listed that will let you file your return free even with 1099Misc income. (if you want to do it yourself)(includes TurboTax)

OK, PLEASE DON'T DO THEM ONLINE AND DIFFANTLY DON'T ADD THE AMOUNTS. A W-2 ALREADY HAS THE TAXES THAT U PAID TAKEN OUT. YOUR 1099-MISC - DOSEN'T MORE THAN LIKLE U ARE GOING TO OWE SOME MONEY. YOU SHOULD REALLY SPEAK WITH AN ACCT./CPA,ENROLLED AGENT. NO H&R BLOCK OR PLACES LIKE THAT. IT'S NOT THE SAME AS AN CPA. A CPA CAN EXPLAIN EVERYTHING FOR U AND GIVE U ADVICE FOR NEXT YOUR TAXES. ALSO THEY CAN E-FILE YOUR RETURN AND IF U DO OWE AND IT'S ALOT THE CPA CAN SET UP AN STREAMLINED INSTALLMENT PLAN, IN OTHER WORDS A PAYMENT PLAN. JUST REMEMBER YOU'LL HAVE INTEREST. HOPE EVERYTHING WORKS OUT FOR U! EMAIL ME IF U HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS

You'd file a schedule C or C-EZ showing your 1099 income and any associated allowable expenses, and a schedule SE to calculate your self employment tax if the net amount on the schedule C is over $400. The numbers from the bottom of the two schedules will go onto a form 1040 (not 1040EZ or 1040A) to calculate your total tax owed. Your W-2 income will go on that same 1040 - you file all of your income together.

You report the 1099 income on Schedule C (or C-EZ). Basically, with a 1099, you are a business. You also report your business expenses (related to the 1099 income) on the same Schedule. You also need to file a Schedule SE, because not only do you have to pay income tax on your 1099 income, you also have to pay both halves (employee's and employer's) of the Social Security and Medicare taxes. That is roughly 15%. But you do get to deduct half of your SE tax for income tax purposes. Buy Turbo Tax and use it. I paid about $25 at Costco, and it handled my 1099 income very easily, automatically taking care of all the necessary forms.

Everyone seems to be assuming this is a 1099-MISC. It could be, for example, a 1099-INT which is entered on the line for interest. What kind of 1099 is it?
