What is the chemical content of pine trees?

Why to they plant larch with other pine trees?

  • on a trip to the country i have noticed that in patches of coniferous trees the often have patches of larch trees growing with them they must be planted like this deliberatly as these are trees for logging. its not like the larch are random but seem to be planted deliberatly in certan places like a row of trees several plants wide halfing the patch of trees in two. its easy to tell the larch as in winter they drop thier needles. it looks like patches of dead pine trees in with the other trees.

  • Answer:

Larch grow quickly (faster than the spruces grown for timber) and provide what's called a shelter belt to protect young conifer trees from wind and weather damage. They're planted in specific areas (usually around the outside of the plantation and cross sections through the middle) at the same time as the main crop of spruce.

They fix nitrogen in the soil for pine trees to use - ie. they fertilise the soil!
