Amount of time to sleep?

Why do you die if you don't sleep for a certain amount of time?

  • why is it fatal to not sleep? after a few weeks, everyone who's tried has just dropped dead. after a few days, they start hallucinating, become unpredicable, suicidal, etc. please help???

  • Answer:

One of the possible side effects of a continued lack of sleep is death. Usually this is the result of the fact that the immune system is weakened without sleep. The number of white blood cells within the body decreases, as does the activity of the remaining white blood cells. The body also decreases the amount of growth hormone produced (8). The ability of the body to metabolize sugar declines, turning sugar into fat. One study stated that people who sleep less than four hours per night are three times more likely to die within the next six years (11). Although the longest a human has remained awake was eleven days rats that are continually deprived of sleep die within two to five weeks, generally due to their severely weakened immune system (10), (11), (12).

Their brain gets too tired and it gives up. Feeling tired, hallucinations, fainting and all the stuff is just a way for the brain to try to get you to go to sleep. But I don't believe taht people start dying after a few days ro weeks.. I stayed up for like 6 days before and nothing happened.

because your brain needs rest. it rests by getting rem. the only way to get rem is to sleep.

well because your brain needs rest

Qudz

your body loses all energy and it shut down.

DreamOn

The body needs sleep, particularly REM sleep to function. You need sleep for your body to repair itself, to restore itself. That's why an all night cram session doesn't necessarily do you very much good. ;)

If you deprive your self of sleep for a LONG period of time your body loses it's capability to function.

Death from insomnia is a relatively rare event. In humans, the only documented cases are individuals with fatal familial insomnia, a disease that can occur either as a prion infection or a genetic condition that manifests itself in late life. The individuals become unable to sleep, and eventually die. Autopsies of victims show considerable internal ulceration and bacterial infection, which appears to be due to a severely weakened immune system.

has this really happened?? i didn'nt think it was possible....

Ellie E

yes, but it takes about 1000 days. If you go long enough without sleeping, your body will shut down and you will fall asleep involuntarily
