What paint do you use on clay?

What paint I should use for Crayola Air Dry Clay that doesn't peel off?

  • I was painting with basic Acrylics on my air dry clay figurine but after 10 minutes the paint peeled off so what should I use?

  • Answer:

acrylic should stay on as long as your clay is dry. You could try putting your figurine into an oven at may 150F (stay well under the boiling point of water) for some time and see whether that helps. It will allow the paint to soak better into the surface. You also could try painting it with a primer first. A primer is a coat of paint which is supposed to make the paint stick better (among other things).

Angela, In a conversation with Crayola I was informed that their products are made just for children's immediate ammusement, not for long-term projects. So I suspect there might not be a paint that will stay on it. But, first, call them (their number is on most if not all of their products) and ask if they know a paint that will work for your project. You might try the enamel paint that people use when painting a model they have put together.
