What paint do you use on clay?

What paint are you supposed to use on clay?

  • I've made a model out of self drying clay, you know the tough grey clay you add a little bit of water to and then shape it. It's going to be dry soon, so I'm just wondering what paint is best to use to paint it. Price isn't an issue. Ty

  • Answer:

acrylic paints work the best and then varnish you can get matte varnish if you want a natural looking finish you can also use shellac mixed with a couple of drops of washing up liquid to get a crackle effect and then rub some more paint into the cracks but try this out on a piece of card first to see the effect you want to produce.

It actually doesn't matter all that much. I always get confused between whats acrylic and what isn't, but in this case it doesn't matter. You can use paint you use for a house, or (once dry) you can even use water color paints. Anything with the word crayola on it is usually a safe bet, but unless the paint has a big sticker saying "DO NOT USE ON CLAY, THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR ART ENTIRELY", I would pick whatever color and price of paint you feel like :)

acrylic works well and has a nice orange peel texture, it is plastic /rubber based ,so if your clay is not all perfectly dry the paint will not change ,do not paint the entire surface ,leave the bottom exposed ,to allow for a place for the water to escape as your model finishes drying out
