What paint do you use on clay?

What kind of paint should I use on air dry clay?

  • I want it to look nice. I don't have a kiln or anything so I bought air dry. Will acrylic paint work good on it? If so should I get glossy or regular paint? I don't know if the gloss effect only works after you've fired it in a kiln. This is really pretty much my first time modeling something with air-dry clay so I'm at a loss, I just want it to look nice.

  • Answer:

acrylic will look matt or semi glossy, if you want that fired ceramic shine use enamel spray paint, always leave some open unpainted area at the base ,so the Sculpture will breath out any moisture

I normally use polymer clay and bake that in the oven but for airdry clay you could try acrylics if you do use normal if you want it to look glossy most craft stores should have a clear gloss paint that should work without having to bake the clay.

hi, i have used acrylic paints. they can be diluted with water, or layed on thick, or both,, you can get a water based acrylic clear coat paint in the same isle ,,, and layer it on after the colors are dry. comes in gloss ,eggshell, or matte. several coats of gloss will make it look like a ceramic/glass effect.. you could also use model paints from the art store or hobby shop, those are nice looking. and ,, nail polish can be very cool looking aswell...! you can use all of these together on the same piece, as long as you allow each to dry between applications, good luck
