What is plaster of paris?

What paint do you need to use for plaster of paris??

  • Im thinking of making a hand for my rings and arm warmers out of plaster of paris and I dont know what paint I need to use so it stays on! I know you have to use one sort of paint

    PoP is a quite porous material and tends to soak up whatever is applied to it. If you solve the porosity or even better seal the surface you can then paint on it. I tell my students to seal it with pva glue that has been watered down about 1 to three glue. Apply this let it dry well, then paint over the surface, acrylic based paints tend to be the best, acrylic free-flow , tempera paste colours or poster paints, no need to buy expensive acrylic or gouache paints. Acrylic would defiently work best, it goes on easily and smoothly since it's a water-based paint and will stay on as well. If you want a glossy finish-paint on a topcoat of gloss-medium. If you want just a matte finish- paint on matte medium. Either of those will help ensure the longevity of the brightness of the paint. You can find these paints at any Craft store-AC Moore, Micheal's, Jo Ann Fabrics, etc.

I've used acrylic paint on plaster of paris masks, 3 years ago and the paint is still on them.

Plaster of Paris will absorb any paint that you apply. Because of it's soft texture it will flake and damage easily. You would need to seal it well to begin with and this would depend on the type of paint you are planning on using. I would suggest that you make a few tests, plaster pieces that you can test the different paints on to see how they hold up to poking and handling. Good luck. It is an interesting idea. Hey, if that doesn't work, have you considered trying paper mache?
