Career in photography.

Photography as a life long career?

  • I love photography, and I want to focus my whole life on doing photography, so I would like to also have it as a career. If you are a professional (you have a career in photography) would you suggest it as a career? I know that it will take a lot of work to become sucessful, but its something I'm willing to do. I want to specialise in weddings\portraitd and familys. But I want to be able to do things like commercial also. I plan to go to college to study photography, then to university.

  • Answer:

Yes, I'd suggest photography as a career but I will also warn you that 90-95% of people fail at the career. Commercial photography and the wedding/portrait world do not really over lap. To succeed, you need to pick on or the other. I can only tell you about commercial photography. It's hard but if you are smart, determined and talented you have a decent chance of succeeding.

There are so many people out there in the world that want to become a photographer. It's a dog eat dog world out there. There might be people that are exceptional at their work, perhaps better than most, and still cannot start up their career. You will start from scum. You will have high troubles. And if you're going to have to pay for your college, you will be in debt for life. The jobs offered would be for the newspaper or a small business. But you would have to start off on your own, and offer your services (at first at a cheap rate). Take some short business classes at your local community college, and get a grasp of how retail works. Build your portfolio as well! :)

if you are wanting to start a "career", that would mean you starting your own business or being freelance... selling your services to clients... BUT you need to learn about running a business/marketing... college and university qualifications mean less than a really good portfolio... weddings are very stressful... try being a second camera to a wedding photographer to get a grounding... and see what it entails... most young people with cameras think they can just do anything, until they realise they can't...

i believe you can, look at the likes of Nigel Parker and Rankin if you believe in yourself you will achieve, photography is also a business so figure out your unique selling point and put 100 percent in, take opportunities, learn and network Best of luck
