Best way to print black and white photos?

Whats the best way to print digital photos? For best quality and look as well as long lasting.?

  • Answer:

Take them to Wal-Mart or Sam's club and have them printed on real photo paper. They will last as long as the average "film" photo, about 125 years. If you insist on printing at home (which costs up to 5 times the price of having it done) then use Epson paper. It is as close to film format as you can get digitally. I have over 30 years in the photography industry under my belt. I retouched at 13 and restored photos my whole life. I started using pencils to retouch negatives and what a nightmare that was! Until 3 years ago, I was the Vice Pres of a negative retouching company. The digital age killed this now lost art. In an attempt to stay current with the so called forward movement of photography, I learned Adobe Photoshop and can restore photos digitally now. I never print using a pc or my Mac. Ever. The quality isn't there yet.

Call up your local photo printing store. Not the one hour places. Ask them if they use archival paper (Kodak/Fuji) in their printers. If they do, ask them what formats they use for printing digital files. Then transfer your files to whatever format they use and go see them. Archival paper comes in hi-gloss or matte finish. The quality will last for 35 years or more if kept in the right evnironment. Using home printers or industrial inkjet printers is fast and cheap and they often look good. But you will never reach the quality and lifespan of archival photo paper.

WHAT?

i like sam's club's quality. they are matte finish so the texture of the paper camouflages the pixels. i just moved so i don't have a sams club to go to anymore :( but maybe you do?

I do photo competitions a lot and I preferred "Costco" quality and price better than "Sam's Club" or Osco or Rite-Aid. The bad thing is you have to join the membership, but, with the outcome quality, I'm happy with it. Costco have larger photo service department and I can pick them up, so, there's no shipping like Osco or Target. I've a lot of dissapointment with Target. If you want to do it at home I would recommended HP more than Epson...and use Photoshop, if you can. My HP printer come w/ cropping, color adjustment, color to B&W, so, it's pretty cool..
