What is the best brand of colouring pencils?

  • I am studying art and I need a decent set of colouring pencil. Many pencils are just useless they are not strong in colouring and tend to snap easily inside. I have used normal crayola around £3 or so and it works ok but I want a better set of colouring pencils but reasonably priced as I am an art student. By the way I am not looking for water colour pencils. I just want a normal set. Looking for: -Strong in colour -Easy to blend -Don't have to press hard and get colour -Long lasting -Nice range of colours

    Berol Prismacolors are the absolute best...they have a smooth buttery texture and no grainy bits. Also, they have the same colors as oil color paints, such as cerulean blue, burnt sienna, etc, not goofy ones like "thistle" from Crayola. The only thing is they cost about $1.50 U.S...of course that's worth a lot less these days so maybe now is the time to buy! P.S. that's $1.50 EACH...for individual pencils. You can get sets which cost a tad less...for example a 36 color set for $32.00 or a 72 color set for $60. They're worth it though, trust me.

Prismacolor are pretty much the industry standard, but for a student, they can be pretty expensive. I've recently started using woodless pencils by KOH-I-NOOR. The colors are rich, and go down very nice. Because they're woodless, you can also make the tip as fat as you like with a piece of sand paper. They're less expensive than Prismacolor, and for the money, just as good.
