What is a good brand of colored pencils?
-
I'm looking to incorperate some color into the a few of the drawnings I am working on and I need a good brand, though not horribly expensive, in a set of 24 to 48. I've heard prismacolor is good, but I've also heard that they've been bought out recently and the quality has dropped a bit. Is this true, or are they still a good brand to get?

I have never liked Prismacolor. They have always seemed to be hard, and the colours pale. I can't imagine the quality getting worse... Design Spectracolor pencils are top quality, in my experience. Vivid colours with a silky wax binder. The biggest downside to them is that they are only sold in sets, not individually. ----------- Edit: I was thinking about this, and you should be warned that all coloured pencils contain wax. This wax is a binder that helps to make the pigment stick to the paper, that's just how it works. It makes coloured pencils really difficult to erase. It also does terrible things with the graphite of a regular pencil drawing. Whatever colour you add will probably come out much darker than you had thought, because the graphite particles mix in with the pencil's pigment. And... if you don't like it, you won't be able to erase it. Whatever brand you chose, be sure to experiment on something other than these drawings you are working on! See how the pencils interact with existing graphite marks.

Try Prismasticks. They last longer because its just the lead, no wood covering. And you dont have to sharpen them, so you dont waste any of the lead.

I haven't tried Prismacolor recently, but Staedtler is a good brand. They also make water colour pencils, so you can use them like regular coloured pencils or create a wash by going over part of the drawing with a wet brush.

I'd go with prisamacolor. You can find individual ones so you can pick your own palette, and not be stuck with colors you don't use.

As you can see, there are many great brands of colored pencils. How light or dark they are on the paper depends on how lightly or heavily you press on the pencil. Have fun!
