Has anyone ever worked for the U.S. Census?

Seeking census info from Bath, Somerset 1882-1886?

  • For a biography, I'm looking for any information I can find on a "Miss Roper" who worked as a nanny for three young children during the years 1882-1886 or thereabouts. I'm wondering if anyone has access to census for Bath or some other searchable source that might give me some information. I'm looking specifically for her first name, address if available, and names of any cohabitants. If you can help, thank you so much!

  • Answer:

The most likely candidate in 1881 is: Emma Roper Occ: Servant/Nurse (which is what nanny's were called) Born Corsley, WIltshire, c.1850 Address is 17 Sion Hill. Parish of Walcot (in Bath). No parents seem to be in residence at the time, but other occupants are children Philip P.J. Wodehouse, b.c.1878 and Armine E. Wodehouse, b.b.1880, both born in Hong Kong (British Subjects). Other servants are Mary Derham, Housemaid, b.c.1858 North Curry, Somerset, and Ann Day, Nursemaid, b.c.1866 in Bath. In 1871 Emma Roper was working for the Pinniger family (Henry and daughter Sophia) in Westbury, Wiltshire. I can't find her in 1861. In 1851 she is with her parents George and Ann Roper, and older sisters Jemima and Ellen, in Bradford, Wiltshire. If you need more, just let me know.
