How many cichlids should I keep in one tank?

Can i keep 3 cichlids in a 29 gallon fish tank?

  • i am about to buy 3 baby cichlids. i have a 20 high tank which i am going to keep them in for about a month or so until they get bigger. i really want to keep them in a small enough tank ( my room isn't that big) i read online that a 29 gallon is OK for 3 full grown cichlids if i keep hiding spaces and alot of decor. can i keep them in a 29 gallon? should i get 3,2 or just one cichlid? if it isnt't big enough can i get another type of fish that is sort of big? if so what kind? thank you.

    Depends on the type of cichlid. German blue rams would be okay in that size tank, but three oscars would be a deadly combo.

Cichlids can grow from 1" to 24+" inches fully grown depending on the species. Then you have to consider their aggression levels. Some are small enough to live in 20gal, but will claim that whole tank, and kill any intruders. Others could be kept together if you were careful about the group compatibility. But if you just have "Cichlids", chances are they are some random African lake species, and will probably kill each other as they mature. They are OK in a smaller tank for a while, but you probably need to plan on a 55gal+ tank to be sure of them getting along. Ian

Well it depends, There are many types of cichlids, and some get to big for a 29 gallon, So you need to do some researching before you purchase your type of cichlids. I would recommend dwarf or african cichlids, most of them don't get very big. But stay away from Most South and Central American Cichlids as they can quite big.
