Who found out which fishes to eat and which fishes are poisonous?

  • How do they know which fishes are edible and who does the testing for this? It's not like they bring in every species they forund for a lab test, right?

    Fish, like most other foods, have been used since before the beginnings of recorded history. Humanity does not and can never know if it was Big Bob or Susy with the Light Brown Hair who first figured out what might be used without problems and what cannot. The same might be said for food that has been stored (you can eat that fresh, but after a week it has these little crawling things in it). Notable exceptions seems to be the more recent testing for natural carcinogens, such as those found in Sassafras root, which had been used for centuries to make a root beer smelling tea.

I guess that they would have just eaten them and found them to be posionous by the person either getting very ill or worse case dying. It's like the fish that the Japanese eat, I think it's the Porcupine Puffer Fish, and it's needs to be cut perfectly by a skilled chef in order to cut out all of the poison or else it could kill you. They must have done some sort of tests on this to find out as it seems that it is quite a complex process. your best best is to eat something that you know definitely isn't poisonous and then you don't have to worry.

Trial and error would be my guess. I don't see how else people could have found out when things were getting started.
